Hardline judge Ebrahim Raisi has won Iran’s presidential election with 17.8 million votes. Mohsen Rezaei, another hardliner, came in second place with 3.3 million votes.
Raisi has not previously served in any elected position, instead he has been a member of the judiciary.
After the 1979 revolution, Raisi was involved in the trials of thousands of opposition figures, most of which resulted in their executions. He is currently under US sanctions for his involvement in those cases.
Raisi is loyal to Ayatollah Khameinei and many see him as a potential successor. The new president has continually spoken in heated terms of the US and Israel, but he has also signaled his support for reviving the JCPOA.
Turnout was around 47 percent. Millions of citizens submitted blanks ballots in protest.
